The Mediterranean Diet The Mediterranean diet arose from the observation that people who live in European countries on the Mediterranean Sea share a typical diet, and live relatively long and healthy lives. Nutritional scientists characterised the diet as based on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Protein came from fish and beans, rather than beef and chicken, and fat came from olive oil and a limited amount of dairy, rather than animal fats.Research has shown that a Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of inflammation and heart disease. It has been associated with a lower level of the “bad” cholesterol that’s more likely to build up deposits in your arteries. To date, virtually every major health organisation encourages healthy adults to adopt a Mediterranean or similar diet for health and the prevention of major chronic diseases.
