Our socially driven philosophy is that all students will learn better if their health and wellbeing is supported. This holistic approach is evident in the way that we approach teaching, learning and human performance.  Innovation is a constant inspiration in our work. MEET OUR TEAM

John Bishop

Managing Director

John Bishop is pioneering a movement to improve the education, wellbeing and life satisfaction of children and young people in the UK.

A qualified teacher, school governor and fellow of both the RSA and RSPH, John has been responsible for delivering innovative educational programmes in over 1,000 primary schools in England and Wales during a career that spans over 20 years in the health and education sectors.

As founder and former Managing Director of Evolve, a multi award award winning social enterprise, John was instrumental in developing a new educational workforce called Health Mentors that addresses multiple challenges currently facing our next generation. This team of highly trained, skilled and motivated Health Mentors work alongside teaching staff in some of the country's most challenging schools to facilitate learning, transform culture and affect change.

John has worked in conjunction with sector skills councils and awarding organisations to develop qualifications and raise the profile of vocational training. John has recently developed a bespoke Level 4 qualification for Health Mentors and is heavily involved in the new Trailblazer Apprenticeship Programme.

John has shared his work all over the world in countries including Slovenia, Croatia, the Netherlands, Dubai and Malaysia. John’s determination to help transform a generation of children and young people has seen him collaborate on projects with some of the country's leading authorities on the subject, including Professor Sir Albert Aynsley-Green, former president of the British Medical Association, who has said:

Eyad Hanash

Contracts Director

Eyad has overall responsibility for the performance of our contracts. Eyad has over 23 years of experience in the sector, gained in both a private and college setting.

Eyad’s background includes:

• high-level contract negotiation with the ESFA and contract performance management
• being a key member of a large College Management Team shaping employer engagement and apprenticeship strategy
• responsibility for the leadership and development of sales teams, sub-contractors, commercial training, employability programmes and audit/compliance functions
• responsibility for a large Employer Services department across Adult Skills Workplace Learning, Apprenticeship and ESF provision
• performance management of delivery teams across a variety of disciplines including Management, Retail, Logistics and Health, covering including planning, monitoring, self-assessment and quality improvement
• providing consultative support to a range of organisations on ESFA funding, audit and compliance requirements, register applications, ILR management, bid writing and MATRIX accreditations

Graham Morgan

Partnerships Director

Graham Morgan started teaching as a graduate PE teacher in 1974 and has been working in the areas of education and sport throughout his wide ranging career. Most recently, Graham qualified as the first MSc Graduate in Health Mentoring and currently delivers the Level 4 Short Course in Health Mentoring in association with Newman University, Birmingham.

What is an apprenticeship standard?

An apprenticeship standard is a specification that determines the structure of an apprenticeship programme, covering three main criteria that make up an apprentice’s occupational profile: knowledge, skills and behaviours.

Standards are created by employers in the sector to ensure the apprenticeship will equip apprentices with practical skills and theoretical understanding required to master their job role.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is an accredited training programme that is delivered both on and off the job. They are structured programmes that are designed in partnership with business and industry to develop a set of knowledge, skills and behaviours required to perform specific job roles.  

Apprentices will spend the majority of their time in the workplace with real tasks and responsibilities that allow them to learn new skills while they work. Alongside this, they will be studying towards their apprenticeship, gaining the theory required to underpin their day-to-day role.

What is the apprenticeship levy?

The apprenticeship levy was introduced by the government in April 2017 and affects all businesses with a UK payroll over £3 million per year. Employers who are required to pay the apprenticeship levy must pay 0.5% of their annual pay bill. Employers can draw down funds from the levy to spend on apprenticeship training.

Employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy are also eligible for apprenticeship funding through the government’s co-investment scheme. The government will fund at least 90% of the training costs with addition incentives if certain criteria are met.

Employers do not have to recruit new employees in order to access their payments to the apprenticeship levy fund. Levy funding can be used to upskill existing staff and this offers an excellent opportunity for teaching support staff where there is often a lack of relevant courses and CPD programmes for them to enrol on.

Will employees need time off to study?

It is a requirement of all apprenticeships that apprentices spend 20% of their working time undertaking off-the-job-training. This should be training that is completed outside of an apprentice’s typical duties and helps them work towards achieving their apprenticeship. This includes attending teaching sessions both on campus and online, completing essays and assignments and practical training, such as shadowing and mentoring.

The Health Mentor Training Programme will require attendance at monthly day-long workshops. Additionally, it is expected that apprentices will need approximately three hours per week of release time for independent study.

Ideally, the learner’s line manager will play an active role in delivering training in the workplace such as giving feedback and informal mentoring to help ensure that learning is effectively transferred and translated to each participating school or college location.

Can a graduate complete the Health Mentor Training Programme?

Yes, graduates are eligible for both the training programme and apprenticeship funding.  

However, the knowledge, skills and behaviours within the Learning Mentor apprenticeship standard must be significantly different to the degree they already hold. This is to ensure that is new learning and development and funds are not being used to simply accredit prior or existing capabilities.
