Yes, graduates are eligible for both the training programme and apprenticeship funding.
However, the knowledge, skills and behaviours within the Learning Mentor apprenticeship standard must be significantly different to the degree they already hold. This is to ensure that is new learning and development and funds are not being used to simply accredit prior or existing capabilities.
It is a requirement of all apprenticeships that apprentices spend 20% of their working time undertaking off-the-job-training. This should be training that is completed outside of an apprentice’s typical duties and helps them work towards achieving their apprenticeship. This includes attending teaching sessions both on campus and online, completing essays and assignments and practical training, such as shadowing and mentoring.
The Health Mentor Training Programme will require attendance at monthly day-long workshops. Additionally, it is expected that apprentices will need approximately three hours per week of release time for independent study.
Ideally, the learner’s line manager will play an active role in delivering training in the workplace such as giving feedback and informal mentoring to help ensure that learning is effectively transferred and translated to each participating school or college location.
An apprenticeship is an accredited training programme that is delivered both on and off the job. They are structured programmes that are designed in partnership with business and industry to develop a set of knowledge, skills and behaviours required to perform specific job roles.
Apprentices will spend the majority of their time in the workplace with real tasks and responsibilities that allow them to learn new skills while they work. Alongside this, they will be studying towards their apprenticeship, gaining the theory required to underpin their day-to-day role.
An apprenticeship standard is a specification that determines the structure of an apprenticeship programme, covering three main criteria that make up an apprentice’s occupational profile: knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Standards are created by employers in the sector to ensure the apprenticeship will equip apprentices with practical skills and theoretical understanding required to master their job role.
The apprenticeship levy was introduced by the government in April 2017 and affects all businesses with a UK payroll over £3 million per year. Employers who are required to pay the apprenticeship levy must pay 0.5% of their annual pay bill. Employers can draw down funds from the levy to spend on apprenticeship training.
Employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy are also eligible for apprenticeship funding through the government’s co-investment scheme. The government will fund at least 90% of the training costs with addition incentives if certain criteria are met.
Employers do not have to recruit new employees in order to access their payments to the apprenticeship levy fund. Levy funding can be used to upskill existing staff and this offers an excellent opportunity for teaching support staff where there is often a lack of relevant courses and CPD programmes for them to enrol on.
